My goal is to lay enough bricks so those behind me have firm footing to build upon.
Making his international culinary debut on what The New York Times ranked as one of the top shows of 2020, Rasheed Philips was a breakout star on Netflix’s American Barbeque Showdown. Although a newcomer to the competition side of BBQ, his culinary mantra “The basics perfected: Time, Temperature, and Technique” thrust Rasheed into the spotlight where he quickly became a fan favorite. Unsurprisingly, he soon cultivated a loyal social media base where his candid approach, humility, and personal charisma reached a wider audience.
When you put your name on something, you have to stand by it! For that reason, more than any other, is why Rasheed Philips studies and practices the craft of Barbeque. Rasheed’s cooking beliefs is based upon a fulfilled cooking mantra, “The Basics Perfected, Time, Temperature and Technique”.
STORIES FROM THE ROAD
As we wrap up another successful year of the Grill and Chill Fest held in the serene surroundings of Corsicana, TX, I find myself reflecting on the incredible moments we shared. This year, we gathered once again to celebrate, savor, and learn from each other in an atmosphere that's as relaxed as it is flavorful.
Join me, on a remarkable culinary journey to Sonoma, California, where I had the honor of headlining the Gozney Proof event. Set against a vineyard so picturesque it doubles as the iconic Windows background, this adventure was a blend of traditional flavors and modern culinary techniques. Highlights included collaborating with Chef Chrissy Tracy to craft dishes like a spiced curry rack of lamb and pepper-herbed shrimp, each prepared in a Gozney pizza dome. Amid the challenging heat of 107 degrees, we embraced the essence of Sonoma, from the lush vineyard setting to the local gastronomic gems like Lou's Lunchette. This trip wasn't just about food; it was about forging connections and fostering creativity in places like the Song Bird commissary kitchen. As I embark on this journey with Deah, I'm reminded that the preservation of culture and craft requires not only passion but also individuals who are dedicated to the art of storytelling and archiving. Through mentorship, I hope to guide Deah toward becoming a torchbearer of heritage and innovation, just as my mentors did for me.
What does it take to be a mentor? Is it merely an experience, a willingness to do so, or is it more? A “thing” if you will, a feeling of wanting more for someone else than they even want for themselves? Honestly, I am not sure, however, I am sure of one thing, To be a good mentor I truly believe you must at some point be a mentee.
