A Night to Remember: Inaugural Smoking Out The Hub Fest in Compton

It was truly an honor to be part of the inaugural Smoking Out The Hub fest, a groundbreaking event hosted by none other than James Beard Award Winner, Kevin Bludso. The festival not only celebrated the rich flavors and traditions of barbecue but did so in a place pulsing with cultural and historical resonance: Compton.

The lineup of talent was nothing short of stellar, featuring luminaries from the barbecue world such as Aunty Delilah, Gruby, AB, Logan Sandoval, and myself, Rasheed Philips. Each of us brought our unique styles and flavors, weaving a tapestry of tastes that was as diverse as it was delicious.

This event marked a significant milestone as it hosted the first-ever sanctioned BBQ competition in Compton, turning up the heat and showcasing the serious culinary chops of the 10 captains and their teams. The competitive spirit was high, but so was the camaraderie, proving that barbecue is as much about community as it is about good food.

The first night set the tone with a hand-crafted pitmaster menu that offered an intimate VIP dinner under the stars at the Compton Aeronautical Museum. The dishes were a testament to the artistry and passion of the chefs involved: duck confit that melted in your mouth, gumbo greens bursting with flavor, and smoked flame-roasted jerk chicken that perfectly captured the essence of barbecue. Each dish was not just food; it was a story of tradition, innovation, and a lot of heart.

As the sun set and planes traced lines across the twilight sky, the ambiance at the museum was surreal. The juxtaposition of grounded historical aircraft against the backdrop of bustling culinary activity created a picturesque scene that attendees are not likely to forget anytime soon. It was a reminder of how places and people come together to create something truly special.

However, a night as successful as this could never have happened without the incredible efforts of the support staff. Their seamless communication and tireless work behind the scenes ensured that everything from the fires in the pits to the lights illuminating the tables ran without a hitch. It was a display of teamwork that echoed the core values of barbecue culture: everyone pitches in, everyone has a part to play, and everyone shares in the success.

The Smoking Out The Hub fest was more than just a barbecue event; it was a celebration of community, a feast for the senses, and a gathering of some of the best pitmasters in the nation. It was a night where every detail, from the crackle of the fire to the smooth glide of planes above, contributed to an atmosphere charged with excitement and a sense of belonging.

For those of us lucky enough to be there, it was a reminder of why we do what we do. Barbecue isn't just about cooking meat; it's about crafting experiences and building communities, one smoky, savory bite at a time. Here's to many more years of Smoking Out The Hub, where the spirit of barbecue and the heart of Compton continues to soar together.
